Soundcloud.com is amazing

The possibilities of the internet are more incredible than ever. The old ways of delivering content (TV Networks, cable, radio) are dying FAST.

And that goes for music too. Remember the revolution of MP3 files? Napster? Mp3.com? But now with a rapidly expanding blogosphere and thriving community networks such as this one, those days seem like a distant memory.

I would estimate that the vast majority of you kind people would agree with this statement: Music is free. Not only is this true symbolically, but NOW it is also meant literally.

Well, maybe not ALL music. HA! Got you for a second! But all kidding aside, anyone can agree that there is a gigantic amount of free music to stream and download off the internet.

Unfortunately now, anyone with a computer has access to software which can make it vastly easier to accomplish than the tools available even 10 years ago. And at 1/100th the cost - even FREE. What that means though is you may have to sift through a virtual PILE of artists to find music which appeals to your own sense of quality. Based on the experimental electronic music I’ve heard (and experienced first hand!) I’m more convinced than ever that “quality” is a subjective term. Quality is what YOU see it to mean. And with this new era of you-choose-what-content-and-when, thank goodness you finally don’t have the meaning of “quality” shoved down your throat. With that kept in mind, I bring you through the proverbial door and reveal to you…

Souncdcloud is a really smart group of people. They knew integrating it with community networking sites would be huge. I have been a Soundcloud user for a few months now and it’s steadily becoming my main source for discovering new music. Soundcloud’s website isn’t laden with ads and has a nice simple interface. Music can be downloaded for free, but the website’s built-in song player is gorgeous and it gives users the ability to comment on the actual timeline of the song. You can even share the same player or “widget” by embedding it into one of your own web pages or blog like I’ve done here.

One of the lessor known but interesting things about the Soundcloud community is that you can share songs to only certain members if you want, lets say for a work-in-progress between collaborating musicians. This gives music producers and artists the ability to share different “versions” of tracks during a song’s development anywhere there is web access.

Integrating your favs from Soundcloud can be done with most of the major community networks such as StumbleUpon, DIGG, Twitter and of course, Facebook.

Souncloud supports artists with a very generous freemium membership. An artist would have to be producing musical content constantly 24-7 to exceed the monthly allotment of uploads, but for full time songwriters who want to amp it up to the stratosphere a ‘pro’ membership might be in order.

So yeah, Soundcloud.com is frikkin amazing. It’s an amazing way to empower musicians, bands, remix artists, producers and songwriters to share their music from a centralized, community-driven download portal with a beautiful and easy to use interface. And, what you find (and maybe even produce yourself!) can be easily shared through your fav social networking site. Amazing indeed.

“Happy Break” ManicAudioKinetics Remix

I recently did a remix for Wesley Dysart on a track called, “Happy Break” from his “Bigger on the Inside” album. Check it out here.

What is Ableton Live?

One can find many answers to this question on the net, even at Wikipedia, but it’s my hope to provide you with a fresh perspective. To answer this question completely would require a post of substantial length, but for the purposes of an introductory blog article such as this, I will attempt to keep the explanation succinct.

Ableton Live is an innovative software solution for the creation of music or audio material. It enables content producers to compose material with fresh and inspiring state-of-the-art methods which have not been present in “virtual studios” of the past. Initially designed as a software solution for performing electronic music “live”, this brave new program has been breaking new ground within the audio engineering community since 2001. As of this writing, the current evolution of this revolutionary application is now in version 8 and is available for Windows™ and Macintosh™ computers and is now considered to be amongst the very best comprehensive (all-in-one) audio production solutions.

In my personal view, one of the greatest features of Ableton Live is it’s inventive user interface. Most “digital audio workstations” (or “DAW” for short) have complex, multi-window work spaces which tend to intimidate beginners. While the ease of navigating the interface may not be immediately obvious, becoming familiar with its’ one-window, multi-view approach typically takes much less time than other DAWs on the market today.

Another ground breaking aspect to Live is the ability to “play” the individual elements (or “clips”) of a composition in an improvised fashion which allows users to explore a variety of ideas before committing to a linear arrangement of those individual elements. The “Session View” (See fig. 1 above) essentially allows the user to in a manner of speaking, “jam out” on individual audio and midi material. The results are streamed into a linear arrangement, also termed the “Arrangement View” (See fig. 2 above), which can be further edited and refined afterward.

Flexibility in generating new musical ideas is further enhanced by Live’s ability to change audio pitch and tempo independently. In the analog world of tape players and turntables if we change the speed of the playback, the pitch of the audio will change as well. Ableton Live’s “elastic” audio engine enables the user to work with audio without these constraints and in fact allows the “stretching” of audio pitch or time independently of each other. This is also a great boon to composers who wish to experiment with other tempos while keeping pitch the same. The converse is also true - one can change pitch without affecting tempo. Other traditional DAWs have similar “offline” features, but Ableton Live performs it’s elastic audio functions in real time which further empowers producers in experimenting with new musical ideas. Midi can also be manipulated in Live in the same way, however this ability is nothing new and is typical of traditional hardware and software midi sequencers of the past.

Another incredible feature of Ableton Live is the manner in which either audio or midi “clips” are triggered. In Live, “Clips” are essentially designated containers of audio or midi information which can be triggered to playback at any time or more importantly, at a synchronized musical time interval. This process in Live is known as “Global Quantization”. Continue reading What is Ableton Live?
